Module 1 Discussion

After reading the APA Code of Ethics, you may have noticed that there are some similarities between this code and Saint Leo University’s Core Values. Please explain why the Core Values of Respect and Integrity are essential to conducting ethical research in psychology. Please also include a discussion of why these Core Values are important when working with diverse participants.

Describes potential risks, discomforts, adverse effects
Told that they may withdraw at any time without penalty
Written informed consent is essential when participants are exposed to MORE THAN MINIMAL RISK
harm or discomfort experienced is not greater than what they might experience in daily lives or during routine physical/psychological tests.
If risks are more than minimal, individuals are considered to be “at risk.”
When individuals are at risk, researchers are ethically obligated to protect participants’ welfare.
Research that places participants at risk should not be carried out if there are alternative methods available that have lower risk.
Informed consent is not necessary when researchers observe public behavior.

Guidelines for Research with Humans
One way of reducing social risk

Data should be collected so that no identifiable aspects can be traced to any one individual
Assign participant numbers to dat

Unless otherwise specified by the professor, students must complete homework assignments by themselves (or if on a team assignment, with only their team members). If they receive outside assistance of any kind, they are expected to cite the source and indicate the extent of the assistance. Each student has the responsibility to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity and to refrain from cheating, plagiarism, or any other form of academic dishonesty as well as reporting any observed instance of academic dishonesty to a faculty member. Student Misconduct/Classroom Disruption Saint Leo University students are expected to conduct themselves at all times in accord with good taste and observe the regulations of the university and the laws of the city, state, and national government. All university community members—faculty, staff, employees, students—have the right and obligation to report violations of civil or university regulations to the appropriate university vice president or to the associate vice president of Student Affairs. Should a university community member encounter a disruptive student, the student shall be asked politely, but firmly, to leave the classroom (or wherever the locus of disruption). A university official has the authority to do this if the student is acting in a disruptive manner. If the student refuses, the appropriate office shall be notified. Saint Leo University’s Commitment to Academic Excellence Statement (abbreviated) Academic excellence is an achievement of balance and growth in mind, body, and spirit that develops a more effective and creative culture for students, faculty, and staff.
